Successful Dog Adoption Program

One of the most important components of an adoption program is helping people to become good pet owners regardless of whether or not they will be denied adoption at the shelter.

Malcolm - English Setter - The Animal Orphanage

Acting in the best interest of the animals never means antagonizing or alienating the public. A good adoption program treats potential adopters with respect and consideration. Research clearly shows that adults are more receptive to learning new ideas and values under conditions which treat them as intelligent, competent, and well-intentioned.

Giving every consideration to a potential adopter does not mean giving a pet to every potential adopters. It simply means treating the person with dignity and respect and listening to “their side of the story.”

Dachshund Rescue

Ashe - Dachshund - Dream Dachshund Rescue

Dachshund Rescue of North America is a 501(c)(3)  nonprofit organization with one sole purpose — rescuing, rehabilitating and re-homing needy dachshunds and mostly dachshund mixes. We are a network of experienced rescue people throughout the United States and Canada who were previously doing rescue independently and realized the benefits of joining together and combining resources. Last year we placed 1009 dogs.

Most dogs spend at least a short time in foster care so we can evaluate their behaviors in a home setting. We can give potential adopters information on how they may interact with cats, kids, men, women, other dogs, and so on. These are vital components to a good match. We also try to improve potty training skills if they are not already house trained. Foster homes provide good nutrition and an understanding lap to prepare our dachshunds for life in a world where fear and starvation are non-existent.

Puppies & More Rescue Adoption

We are a small group of volunteers dedicated to finding homes for canines in need. We provide immediate medical attention which includes making sure they are up to date on immunizations, and spayed or neutered, as well as loving foster homes where the dogs are evaluated and socialized into the family setting.

The First Time We Saw Dirka

Until you have held a tiny puppy in your arms as it kissed your face with slobbery puppy breath and felt the love, Until you have held an injured or severely ill dog in your arms and felt their pain Until you have looked into the eyes of a tired aging senior dog and felt their wisdom, And until you have seen and understood the look in your dogs eyes that tell you their time on earth with you is over …. and you humanely let them go, You will never understand the life of a rescuer. We find beauty in the most incomprehensible places and the otherwise homely faces. It is our gift to see beyond the dirt, terror, sadness and defeat and find the true soul that lies within. We are Rescue. Written by Kathie Sullivan-Parkes

Dirka Adopted

National statistics: Only 1 out of 10 dogs born ever get a home. Only 1 out of 12 cats born ever find a home. 800 dogs & cats are KILLED each HOUR in the U.S , because there are not enough homes for them. Saving one animal will not change the world , but it will change the world for that one animal.
